Dated 5/27/11
NOW OPEN FOR SELECTIVE GEAR RULES UP TO 4700 BRIDGE.
The south fork toutle produced afew steelies on saturday May 20th but

bobber fishermen.
Many fly
anglers were using floating fly lines with long leaders and
green butt skunks. Others were using type 6 sinking leaders or sinking
tips with short leaders of 4 feet.
Good flies to
use here include BH Woolly Buggers, Green Butt Skunks, Steelhead Mojos,
Silver Hiltons, MOAL Leeches, String Things, Stone Fly Nymphs and BH
Lifters, BH Marabou Tube Flies and others.

No reports
from anglers of success here but there should be fishing here for
winter steelies. Levels are falling but be watching the river levels
and weather reports for up dates at www.blackheronflyfishing.com These
river and weather reports are automatically generated by the National
Weather Service and USGS providing upto date material every few minutes.
Dated 11/30/10
The south fork
toutle has been looking very good as far as water level the last few
days. With the past high water over 3 weeks there can only be a
fair to good number of winter steelies in this river. Monday the
29th the river was in perfect condition to wade and flyfish here
making access extremely easy over large area.
Please consult the regs on this area as they are changing soon.
Open 6/1- 3/31/11 for 2 hatchery steelies.
Selective Gear rules apply 12/1/10 till 3/31/11 below the 4100 bridge. Closed above 4100 bridge.
Consult WDFW regs for details.
Date 7/26/10
Water is low and clear.
Difficult fishing till fall waters come.

CLOSED TILL JUNE

NOTE THAT SELECTIVE GEAR RULES ARE IN EFFECT FOR THE SOUTH FORK TOUTLE. PLEASE CONSULT THE GAME REGULATIONS FOR DETAILS.
The
current river flows are at 500 cfs and the weather should remain very
good through the rest of this month providing excellent fly fishing for
winter steelies
The
South Fork of the Toutle has been fishing very well for winter steelies
with numerous reports of fly angler success in the last 2 weeks.
With the deadline for fishing this river approaching you might want to consider a trip to this stream soon.
Good patterns
to consider are the Green Butt Skunk, BH Buggers, Glo Buggs, Stone Fly
Nymphs, Spade Flies, Matukas and small spey flies.
Plan on doing
a little walking on this river. A good suggestion is to use a drop car
and fish down stream to the second vehicle.
Sinking tip
fly line and leaders are good suggestions when fishing the South Fork
but many anglers will fish floating leaders and lines on this river due
to its level most of the winter.
Many large fish are caught here every year between December and March 31st when the river closes.

CHANELS FIRST STEELIE!!!!!!!
DATED 3/11/09
NOTE THAT SELECTIVE GEAR RULES ARE IN EFFECT FOR THE SOUTH FORK TOUTLE. PLEASE CONSULT THE GAME REGULATIONS FOR DETAILS.
Running at 300 cfs and fishing is excellent to good. The beginning fly
anglers are having extremely good luck this year averaging 1 steelie
per angler. Most fly anglers are using string leeches and stone fly
nymph patterns fished in the bodies of the runns.
Many anglers are using sinking rio leaders in the 5.6 -7.0 inches per second.
It is still relatively hard to find any hatchery steelies on this river.
Water clarity is very good with moderately low flows.
DATED 3/4/09
The South Fork Toutle has been doing very well for winter steelies. The
majority of these fish are native fish with no clips and very fiesty to
take a fly on the swing.
The water level on the South Fork is running 500 cfs and clarity is
excellent. This river is governed by selective gear rules requiring
single point barbless hook and artificial lures. Two hatchery
steelies are allowed but this is not the stream to find a hatchery
steelie in as most are unmarked fish.

The rain today should push new fish into the South Fork and create an
even larger opportunity for fly angling in the next few days. The best
fly patterns to use on the South Fork Toutle are the BH Stone Fly
Nymph, BH Lifter, Steves String Leech and Johns Marabou String Leech.
Good alternate patterns would include the Green Butt Skunk, Freight
Train, Fly DeJour, Polar Shrimp, Black Boss and Pink Matukas with
Barbell Eyes.
Take your rain gear and plan on finding fewer anglers due to

Congratulations Brett Bates on your 25 pound 41.5 inch winter steelie. Bretts fish was caught using a single
hand fly rod and a Steves String Leech bought from Black Heron Fly
Fishing in Longview, Washington just before the Superbowl on last
Sunday. He also hooked another fish which got off on the same fly which
weighed about 14-15 pounds.
This fish was hooked and immediately released after picture was taken.
Thanks for letting this one go Brett he will generate many more like
him and we will all have a chance to catch one this way.

Its a big one and gonna take a while!!!!!!! Brett Bates and his 25 pound
native winter steelie on a Sage VT2 890, 4 piece fly rod.
Dated 2/3/09
The south fork toutle has been red hot the last few days producing over
15-20 fly rod fish. Several of these fish were over 15 pounds. Most
fish were caught using Steves String Leechs, Johns Cone
Head Marabou String Leechs, Matukas and Comets.
The majority of anglers fishing the river said it is very low and
wadable with flow around 200 cfs making navigation from one point to
another very easy. This river has defintely changed since last year
with the high water in January so the runs and holding area have
changed. Get out there and do some exploring you will find this river
is very fishable with new water available.
1/24/09
The prospect of finding fish on the South Fork of the Toutle would be
good. The water has fallen into a nice clear green color and we have
seen fish hanging in the tailouts from the high positions on the river.
Good patterns for the South Fork would include a snow flake intruder,
cream steelhead strip leech, BH stone flies, skykomish sunrise,
polar shrimps and BH lifters.
Fishing sinking tip fly lines and sinking leaders are almost mandatory with short 3-4 foot leaders.
Selective gear rules are in effect till March 31st, 2009.
12/3/08
Starting December 1st the selective gears rules have began on the South Fork of the Toutle River.
The fishing has been average with a few steelies being caught. More
fish are expected shortly. The river levels are currently 400 cfs with
a moderate amount of turbidity.
Turbidity can be a major factor on the South Fork. Please check these
parameters out before fishing on www.blackheronflyfishing.com
11/06/08
The south fork has seen a little improvement in the water level and should start to see some fish entering due to flow.
DATED 9/23/08
North Fork Toutle - Bank anglers averaged ½ hatchery adult coho per rod. Some
fall chinook are also being caught.
Green River - Bank anglers are
catching some hatchery coho.
Dated 9/23/08
Low and clear. Fish early in the morning using very light gear and small flies.
Fishing has been fair in the last few weeks. The angling should
drastically improve with the temperatures falling during the fall
season. Please chech all regulations before venturing out to fish.
Please checkout the web site www.blackheronflyfishing.com for current
river levels and weather reports. These reports are found on our home
