The fish in the lower river are taking flies and the counts are continuing to rise providing a great out look for this summer and fall.

Water temps have been high so be quick in releasing all native steelhead.

Trout fishing in the Maupin area is good in the morning and evening due to heat.

Steelhead should beging showing in the Maupin area any day in good numbers

The fish Counts on the Columbia River are starting to gain strength and we should see more and more steelhead heading here in the next few weeks.

There are steelhead present in the lower Deschutes currently

Expect this to be a very good steelhead season as the number of fish in the lower Columbia seem to be in good numbers.

Dated 6/4/10

The salmon fly hatch is on and going strong according to anglers fishing above the locked gate and in the Warm Springs area to Trout Creek.
The hatch appears to be strong in occuring mostly in the afternoons along brushy shorelines and in over hanging trees.

Dated 5/9/10

The Deschutes should be good for trout fishing using elk hair caddis, soft hackles, stone fly nymphs, blue wing olives and other flie as the weather improves.

Be looking for the salmon flies and golden stone flies to begn emerging as they have already began their nymphal migration to the shorelineand are congregating along the shoreline. You should began watching this area around the middle of the month for salmon flies in the late afternoon and early evenings. Truely one of the great dry fly fisherys in the western United States.

Dated 4/26/10

A good area to start in your search for the Salmon and golden stone flies is the South Junction and Madras areas.

It should be noted the most years the Salmon flies(Life Cycle of 2-3 years) emerger first and last approximately 2-3 weeks. The Golden stones then emerge and produce a much better hatch due to its consistency. Although the goldens are smaller there are many more of them generally on any specific year due to there life cycle of 1 year.

The Deschutes river stone flies should be migrating to the edges of the river as the water levels are high and perfect to start the nymphal migration for their emergence in Mid May. Be prepared with a variety of nymphs and dry flies for these insects varying from Kuafman Stone Fly Nymphs, Matts Furrs, Pheasant Tail Nymphs, Elk Hair Caddis, Stimulators, Sofa Pillows, Copper Jons and others.

Blue wing olives and CDC emergers  would also be good alternate patterns at this time especially in back eddy areas.

Wooly Buggers can produce very large fish when fished in the heads of riffles and in slower areas

Dated 4/8/10

The Deschutes river is doing well for trout in the Maupin area using Blue Wing olives and Stone fly nymphs. Caddis dries and nymphs patterns are also  good choices.

Water levels are holding and should provide good fly angling through the spring.

The giant salmon fly and golden stone flies are most likely going to be congregating on the banks to begin their emergence in May and June.

The Deschutes is doing well for summer steelies above Maupin Oregon.

Dated 12/20/09
The Deschutes river is still producing good numbers of summer steelies above Maupin, mostly between South Junction and the Warm Springs bridge. It should be noted that the area above Warm Springs Closes December 31, 2009.

Trout fishing has been good in the Maupin area using Nymph patterms from Baetis and Stone flies. Flyfishing the edges of riffles and runs along with the back eddies can be very good this time of year.

The number of angler this time of year can be very low due to the cooler temps.

Dated 12/9/09

Artic temps are keeping the majority of anglers off the river at this point. When the temps break you can expect more anglers to be after the summer run steelies which are still present on the upper river around Maupin.

Current river level is 4600 cfs at Moody Rapids close to the mouth.

Summer levels may make for some interesting trout fly fishing even during the colder weather. The area above the Locked Gate on the access road at Maupin should provide excellent trouting this time of year using nymph patterns.

Dont forget the Stanleys Ice Off!!!!! Youll definitely need it on this river.

Dated  11/12/09

The temps are defintely lower this time of year but the fishing has been very good from the mouth up stream to above Maupin Oregon.

Dated 10/20/09

The Deschutes is reporting a great year for summer steelies and large trout from Max Canyon to Warm Springs at the highway crossing.

If travelling to the Deschutes plan on taking some warm clothing as this river is cold and the air temp even colder in the upper 20's during the mornings.

The Deschutes river is doing extremely well for summer steelies from the mouth to Pelton dam.

Fly fishing in the lower river has been very good with many angler reporting multiple fish days but the crowds are present.

Jet boat traffic has been heavy according to reports.

Trouble finding good camping sites has also been a problem.

The lower river has B run steelies destine for the Snake and Clearwater rivers.

The area above Maupin is doing well for summer steelies and trout.

Best times to fish are early and late.

This is only the beginning of the good fishing here. Plan on a long summer steelie season and even longer trout period if the weather holds.

9/1/09

Anglers from the mouth of the Deschutes to Maupin are doing very well for steelies using flies.

Dated 8/20/09

The Deschutes is doing very well with a record number of steelies entering the river. The area from the mouth to Mack Canyon is reported to be the best for the steehead. Plan on a long trip down the Mack Canyon road to your destionation or a long hike up from the mouth is on foot.

One of the best areas from September 1st till mid November is the mile post 7 area above the mouth due to Clearwater and Snake River fish holding in the cold Deschutes river water.

Many of these up river fish will also hold in the Lower John Day River.

The Deschutes river is good for summer stillhead in the lower sections and will continue to improve as the fall approaches.

Fly fishing in the middle sections of the river from Maupin to Warm Springs is good also. The best hatches are on Caddis patterns such as the Elk Hair Caddis and Emergent patterns like a Lafontaine Caddis Emerger. Cased Caddis also work well this time of year and will be replaced by the October Caddis Emerger the first part of September.

Large Stone Fly Nymphs work well dead drifted through the riffles and along currnet seams.

The best time to fish this river are in the morning before sun up and after the sun has dipped below the canyon walls.

Take lots of water when visiting the Deschutes as this is a semi arid area with very little water.

The area between Warm Springs and Maupin is the best for trout fishing and is best accessed by Drift Boat or Pontoon Boats.

The Deschutes river is beginning to see some summer steelies enter the lower river. The fishing has been relatively good when the weather will cooperate. The best times to visit are in the late evening and early morning due to temperature.

The Deschute river redsides are also doing well in the area from White river up to Warm Springs. The best area for trout is always Warm Springs to Trot Creek if you have a pontoon boat or drift boat.

Many anglers like to use dry flies this time of year and they can produce some very nice results. My favorite patterns for the Deschutes are the Elk Hair Caddis, Dun Comparaduns, BH Prince Nymphs, BH Stone Fly Nymphs, BWO and Stimulators.
